Utexas a&m vs lsu ndaunted by past, Elko, Texas A&M thump LSU at Tiger Stadium
BATON ROUGE, Louisiana — Texas A&M coach Mike Elko isn’t interested in the Aggies’ past or what they failed to achieve during decades of poor performance. His focus is on the Aggies of 2025, who beat LSU 49-25 on Saturday night to improve their record to 8-0.

Texas A&M scored 35 consecutive points to win, emptying Tiger Stadium and celebrating with a large crowd of fans in the southeast corner of the stadium.
“I always say this: It’s not about the past,” Elko said. “We have to stop worrying about the past, wallowing in the past, and talking about the past. I’m excited about this team’s performance right now.
“This team is doing something special.”
The third-ranked Aggies are 8-0 for the first time since 1992, following their first win at LSU as an SEC member. Texas A&M has scored 40 or more points in four consecutive away games for the first time in team history, tying an SEC record, and has scored the most points against a ranked LSU team at Tiger Stadium since Georgia scored 52 points in 2008.
“They tried to put a quote in there that I said Death Valley was disappointing,” Aggies quarterback Marcel Reed said. “And to be honest, I think it was disappointing. They didn’t do much to me.”
The most striking aspect of Texas A&M’s loss was how impossible it seemed until halftime, when No. 20 LSU led 18-14. The Aggies had a disappointing second quarter, albeit a historically familiar one, when they had a punt blocked for a safety in the end zone, threw two interceptions, and fell behind 11-0.
Texas A&M outgained LSU 258-189 at halftime, but their mistakes led to their first halftime loss this season. The Aggies’ only win in their last 10 games despite trailing at halftime came against LSU last season.
Regarding his message at halftime, Elko said, “I said, ‘You’re the better team, but you have to play better football, and if you don’t play better football, you’re going to miss a chance tonight.'” Will you give it?'”
Reed continued: “Elko definitely said some things. I don’t remember everything. However, it was definitely offensive.”
Reid felt from the start of the game that Texas A&M was the better team, but the Aggies had to prove it. They outscored LSU 21-0 in their best quarter of the season and outscored the Tigers 132-14. Star wide receiver Casey Concepcion played brilliantly, returning a punt 79 yards for a touchdown.
Texas A&M punted only once in the second half and forced LSU to punt four times in a row. Elko credited the strong finish to strength and conditioning coach Tommy Moffitt, who held that position at LSU from 2000 to 2021 until he was removed during the coaching transition from Ed Orgeron to Brian Kelly.
“Moffitt wanted this game as much as anyone,” said Reid, who finished with 202 passing yards and two touchdowns, 108 rushing yards and two scores. “I remember on Thursday, he tackled a dummy. Brian Kelly’s face. Yeah, that was very important to him.”
Some LSU fans demanded Kelly’s dismissal in the final minutes as the Tigers, who began the season with national championship aspirations, lost for the third time in four games. LSU had a 20-1 record in night matches under Kelly.
When a reporter asked about Kelly’s record, Elko said, “20-2.”
LSU has a 4-5 record in its last nine SEC matches.
Kelly, who turned 64 on Saturday, said, “Our fans are disappointed, like any fan group. It’s up to the head coach, so that responsibility falls on me.”
Elko is well aware of what Texas A&M has been, and what venues like Tiger Stadium have represented for the program. He was the Aggies’ defensive coordinator in 2019, when LSU defeated the Aggies 50-7 in Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow’s last home game en route to the national championship. Texas A&M has suffered both large and small losses in this stadium, dating back to 1994, when they won 18-13.
Elko said, “I told the kids, ‘The last time [Texas A&M] won here, I was the starting point guard on my high school basketball team.'”
He avoided saying whether he expected an 8-0 start or such an impressive win on such a poor home field like previous Aggies teams. But winning at Texas A&M this season has been a challenge. On the road—a last-minute comeback at Notre Dame, tough wins against Auburn and Arkansas, and several impressive victories have given Elko confidence that his team can meet all the criteria to become a championship contender.
Texas A&M is entering an open week before November that will determine whether it will make its first appearance in the College Football Playoff.
“There’s definitely still a lot to prove, and I think a lot of people in this country still believe that,” Reed said.
