Michigan vs mi state Overheard outside Michigan’s locker room: No backflips and talking with pads
East Lansing – Chants of “Hail to the Winners” echoed from Michigan’s locker room to the postgame media center inside Spartan Stadium.
Head coach Sherrone Moore and players spoke with reporters after the 25th-ranked Wolverines’ 31-20 victory over Michigan State on Saturday. Michigan has won two in a row, improving its record to 6-2 and 4-1 in the Big Ten.

Highlights from the press conference are as follows:
Regarding Michigan’s first four-game winning streak in this rivalry since 2002-07, Moore said: “That’s what it’s all about. We’ve talked a lot about the importance of this game all week. We talked about it after the game against Washington, and then on Tuesday we talked about the importance of winning this game for the history of this rivalry, the state, the city, and the record. Winning this game and having Paul come home again means a lot to us.”
Moore said of linebacker Jimmy Rodgers, who had the best game of his career, including 10 tackles, two for loss, a sack, a fumble recovery, and a fourth-down pass breakup: “Jimmy played great. Absolutely great… In general, the defense works very hard, plays very physically. If they do that and improve on these little things, it will help us and we will become a great defense.”
Regarding the scene inside the locker room after the game, Rodgers said: “This state rivalry is always great. Everyone was very excited and their energy was felt throughout the game. Then in the locker room, everyone was happy for each other, especially for Coach Moore. Great win.”
Edge T.J. Guy said of MSU being penalized 12 times for 105 yards: “I think we were pretty disciplined. We knew all week that they were going to try to focus the game on that. We just wanted to play ball, so I think we did a good job of playing ball and letting our pads do the talking.”
Edge Derrick Moore said of the team’s defensive changes over the past two weeks: “We were really executing well and making tackles. I also want to commend defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. He’s been criticized a lot over the past few weeks for his play calling. But I think it’s always up to us, like we have to go out there and perform well defensively. I think we, I was a leader and the rest of the defense was a leader, we just came together and talked and we solved the problem and now we’re back to playing Michigan football.”
Moore said of Justice Haynes, who returned after missing the previous game due to injury and totaled 152 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries: “It was great, 1.) having him back, 2.) having him back—obviously he’s an explosive player, one of the best running backs in the country in our eyes. It was great having him back; he performed well physically. He continues to play at a high level; having him back was a big deal.”
Quarterback Bryce Underwood, who ran for a 13-yard touchdown in the second quarter, asked if he planned to celebrate in the Paul Bunyan pose before the touchdown: “When I got in the end zone, I was thinking about what I was going to do… I was thinking about backflips.”
