Packers vs steelers ‘Up-and-coming’ Jordan Love stars as Packers defeat Steelers
PITTSBURGH — It was just like the Aaron Rodgers of old. Just like Jordan Love.
Twenty consecutive pass completions.
Three hundred and sixty yards passing.
Three touchdowns.
No interceptions.
Seeing Rodgers in the Steelers’ black and gold jersey, Love, the quarterback who replaced him with the Green Bay Packers, showed how much he learned from his predecessor in a 35-25 victory Sunday night at Rodgers’ new home, Achrisar Stadium in Pittsburgh.
“He’s shown he’s a successor,” Packers defensive end Micah Parsons said. “He’s a rising star. Like J-Love, when I came here, I thought, ‘I know they have a quarterback, I know I have a quarterback.’ I’m so proud of him, everything he’s done, how he’s grown as a player, how he’s grown as a human being, and he’s playing great football right now.”
It all started after a difficult first half, with the Packers trailing 16-7. Then, Love began to find his rhythm. He nearly doubled his previous highest number of consecutive pass completions, which was 11, and nearly equaled Rodgers’ record of completing 22 consecutive passes in two games in 2022, his final season in Green Bay.
Packers defensive end Rashan Gary said, “He’s the one. He’s the one. Everyone in the league, if you haven’t woken up yet, please wake up. Close your eyes because he’s the one, and there are 10 more coming. That’s it.”
According to ESPN research, Love completed 29 of 37 passes, making it the sixth time a Packers quarterback has completed 75% of his passes in a game, including at least 350 yards and three touchdowns. Rodgers has the most such half-games. Brett Favre and Don Majkowski each have one touchdown.
“Obviously, being behind A-Rod for three years, watching him and seeing his high-level play, what he was able to do as soon as he got on the field and being able to put the ball in the right direction all the time, it was all great for me,” Love said.
Love handled the Steelers’ pressure admirably. He completed 11 of 15 passes against the blitz for 183 yards. All three of his touchdowns came when the Steelers sent in extra rushers.
Packers tight end Tucker Craft said, “The legacy that [Rodgers] left, I would say Jordan is carrying it forward.” “When you talk about Favre to Rodgers and then Love, Jordan has stepped up and fulfilled his promise.”
Craft caught two touchdowns – a 16-yard catch-and-run in the first quarter, which was the Packers’ only score before halftime, and a 24-yard catch in the fourth quarter that put the Packers ahead by 10 points.
Craft also caught a 59-yard pass that Love threw in desperation under pressure. Craft had seven catches for 143 yards – 128 of which were on his first catch, the most YAC in a game by a tight end since George Kittle’s 135 yards in 2018 – and two scores.
Deep-threat receiver Christian Watson returned after suffering an ACL tear in the final game of last year’s regular season. He caught four passes for 85 yards.
Watson said of Love, “He really took charge. We knew we had to play better in the second half. I think he took charge and led us in the right direction and put us in the right position, and that’s what we needed from him. He was a really great player.”
This didn’t surprise Packers coach Matt LaFleur, who saw Love wait three years behind Rodgers before becoming the starter in 2023.
“It’s great for Jordan,” LaFleur said. “Jordan has worked his ass off to get here. He’s been patient throughout the whole process, the whole journey, and he’s made the most of his opportunity, he really did. It’s been amazing.”
After the game, Rodgers and Love had a brief conversation near midfield.
