FRISCO, Texas — According to law enforcement officials, 24-year-old Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshon Neyland died Thursday morning after allegedly shooting himself.
The team released a statement Thursday but did not disclose the cause of death.
“The Dallas Cowboys are deeply saddened to announce the tragic passing of Marshon Neyland this morning. Marshon was a beloved teammate and member of our organization. Our thoughts and prayers are with his girlfriend, Catalina, and his family.”
The Cowboys have made counseling resources available to all players, coaches, and staff. The players are on break and are not scheduled to practice again until Monday.
According to Frisco (Texas) police, the department responded to help the Texas Department of Public Safety locate a vehicle that eluded police during a vehicle pursuit that entered the city at approximately 10:39 p.m. Wednesday.
DPS troopers found Neyland’s vehicle crashed on the Dallas Parkway southbound lanes near Warren Parkway. According to reports, Neyland fled the scene on foot, and officers searched the area with the help of K-9 and drone units.
While officers were searching for Neyland, a dispatcher told officers that people who knew him had received a group message from Neyland that read, “Goodbye.” According to a recording obtained by Broadcastify, which archives public safety radio feeds, they were concerned for his well-being.
About three hours later, Neyland was found with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Neyland’s agent, Jonathan Parzley, described his death as “a pain I cannot describe.”
“I am deeply saddened to report that my client and dearest friend, Marshawn Neyland, passed away last night,” Parzley said in a statement. “I watched him struggle from a dreamy, optimistic kid from Western Michigan to a respected professional player for the Dallas Cowboys. Marshawn put his heart into every snap, every practice, and every moment on the field. Losing someone of his talent, passion, and kindness is a pain I cannot express.”
“My condolences are with his family, his teammates, and all those who loved him, and I hope they receive the support of the entire football community during this unimaginable time. I ask that you please give his loved ones the privacy and empathy they need as they grieve this irreparable loss.”
The NFL issued a statement saying it was “deeply saddened” by Neyland’s passing and that the league had provided “support and counseling resources” to the Cowboys.
Western Michigan coach Lance Taylor said in a statement: “I am completely devastated by the passing of Marshawn Neyland. Marshawn was more than just an incredible football player – he was an extraordinary young man who meant so much to our program and to me personally. His leadership, energy, and smile were amazing, and he left a profound impact on everyone in our program. After coaching him in my first season here, we developed a special bond that went far beyond football. His passion for life and his teammates was unmatched. Our entire Bronco football family mourns his passing, and we send our deepest prayers to his family, teammates, and all who loved him. Marshawn will always be a part of the Bronco fraternity.”
Neyland was selected by the Cowboys as their second-round pick in 2024 out of Western Michigan, 56th overall. During Monday’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals, he scored the Cowboys’ first touchdown, recovering a blocked punt in the end zone.
He missed two games this season due to injury and has 15 tackles, 1 sack, 2 tackles for loss, and 6 quarterback hurries. As a rookie, he missed six games due to a knee injury and has 17 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 13 quarterback pressures, 1 pass breakup, and 1 fumble recovery.
Greg Ellis coached Neyland as an assistant on the Cowboys’ staff last year. He stayed in touch and texted with him before the season started.
“He had everything a football player should have. He played the game hard,” Ellis said. He was eager to learn. “You hear a lot about this generation, but Marshawn wasn’t like that. He was still a ‘yes sir, no sir’ kind of guy. He needed extra help with things. That’s just the way he was. Extra work, film study.”
