Huge global outage impacts Amazon, Fortnite and Snapchat, Amazon’s AWS Disruption Creates Outages for Hundreds of Websites for Hours
A massive outage at Amazon Web Services temporarily disrupted many popular internet sites and services, affecting banks, airlines, media, delivery apps, and many other websites and apps.
AWS is a cloud computing provider that hosts many of the world’s most widely used online services. Early on, Amazon needed additional server capacity to ensure it had enough computing power to handle the heavy traffic its site would experience during the holiday season. Amazon realized that it could use those servers to meet other companies’ online needs throughout the rest of the year, and this led to the birth of AWS.
One of AWS’s many services is DynamoDB, a database that hosts corporate information, including customer data. Amazon said Monday morning that its customers were unable to access data stored in DynamoDB because of a problem with the Domain Name System—a kind of phone book for the internet. DNS is like an internet location engine, which translates user-friendly web addresses like amazon.com into IP addresses – a series of numbers that other websites and applications can understand.
“Amazon had stored the data securely, but for several hours no one could find it, leaving apps temporarily disconnected from their data,” said Mike Chappell of the University of Notre Dame. “It was as if a large portion of the internet had temporarily lost its memory.”
It’s unclear what caused the DNS outage, but it only lasted a few hours. By 6:35 a.m. Eastern Time, Amazon had fixed the DNS issue and advised companies to dump their caches (temporary storage files) to speed up the restoration of their services.
Amazon said the outage continued to affect other AWS services, including EC2 – a type of virtual server that many companies use to build their online applications.
The company will investigate and report on the issue with its DNS system in the coming days.
As we previously reported, today’s Amazon outage also affected major UK banks, leaving customers without access to vital services.
