Warriors vs Lakers Luka Doncic scores 43 in Lakers’ loss, says groin issue ‘probably nothing
LOS ANGELES — After playing a game-high 41 minutes in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 119-109 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday, Luka Doncic was forced to spend more time in the training room due to an injury to the inside of his right leg.
Coming to the postgame press conference about an hour and a half after the final buzzer sounded, Doncic said, “Probably nothing major. Just felt a little bit because my hip went the opposite way. Felt a little bit, but probably nothing major.”
Before the change, Doncic was dominant. He finished the match with 43 points, 12 rebounds, and nine assists and appeared more active on defense than ever since joining the Lakers late last season, also recording two steals.
Doncic said, “I think I’m getting better defensively, I’m just trying to connect and communicate more [with my teammates].” “But overall, it’s 41 minutes, so I like it.”
Doncic, who strengthened his physique through hard work and diet in the offseason, was effective at the rim against the Warriors. According to ESPN research, he made 13 of 14 shots in the paint and 15 of 17 on 2-pointers.
He did have three turnovers, which was a problem for the entire Los Angeles team as the Lakers committed 20 errors, leading to 22 points for the Warriors.
And he made 2 of 10 3-pointers, making it difficult for the Lakers to make 8 of 32 3-pointers.
The Lakers also trailed 35-25 in the third quarter, making the game easier for Golden State.
“The trend I’m seeing is that we’re a very weak team in the third quarter,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said. “That was last year. That was preseason. Some things have to be reconsidered, and you know, it’s a two-way street for players. What do they need at halftime to be ready to play? They’re not ready to play at the beginning of the third quarter.”
The Lakers will have two days of practice and recovery time for Doncic before their next home game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday.
