Chicago Marathon Tracking 53,000 runners take to streets for Bank of America Chicago Marathon
Thousands of runners took to the streets of Chicago on Sunday morning for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.
According to Rita Cook, President of Bank of America Chicago, 25% of the runners were visiting Chicago for the first time, and a third came from overseas.
The race also contributes $680 million to the city’s economy, as runners and their traveling companions stay in Chicago hotels, eat at downtown restaurants, and shop at local businesses.
Cook also emphasized the philanthropic benefits of the marathon.
He said, “I think the biggest contribution is the 18,000 runners who are contributing to over 200 causes. From a philanthropic perspective, that’s really important.”
This year’s runners included Otis Hudson, who took up running after playing football for several years. He was running for Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, which helps children traumatized by neglect, abuse, poverty, and violence.
“I think this transition has been a journey,” Hudson said. “I would say running is more strenuous than football, because you get used to hitting people every day. But running, something new comes up, right? So this week I injured a different muscle, and maybe a bone too – so it’s just something different.”
The race schedule is as follows:
The men’s professional wheelchair race will start at 7:20 am. The women’s professional wheelchair race will start at 7:21 am. The handcycle race will start at 7:23 am. The men’s and women’s professional races will start at 7:30 am. The high-performance event will start at 7:32 am. The first wave will start at 7:35 am. The second wave will start at 8:00 am.
