Demonstrators Gather Across the U.S. for ‘No Kings’ Protests Against Trump, Crowds gather at anti-Trump “No Kings” rallies across the U.S., worldwide

Thousands of protesters gathered in cities and towns across the country on Saturday to denounce a president they see as acting like a king. The demonstrations were part of a day of mass protests against the Trump administration.

By noon, a carnival-like atmosphere had filled New York’s Times Square, with colorful banners, one of which read, “I pledge allegiance to a king.” Protesters wore various costumes, including the inflatable frog costume that activists in Portland, Oregon, began wearing to mock the White House’s attempt to portray activists as anarchists or domestic terrorists.

Waving American flags, the crowds chanted “No more Trump!”

Known as “No Kings Day,” the event builds on a previous demonstration in June that drew large crowds to nearly 2,000 rallies across all 50 states.  Unique Epstein-Ortiz, national spokesperson for the coalition behind the event, said that this time, about 600 additional protests were scheduled, mostly in rural areas.

In Atlanta, thousands of people gathered in a downtown parking lot, where the atmosphere was calm, but attendees expressed dismay at the Trump administration’s tactics.

Among them was British citizen Katherine Browning, wearing a bright green frog onesie.

“I really felt I needed to be here today because so many people are going through so many terrible things,” she said, citing actions by federal immigration agents that “dehumanize people.”

Ms. Browning, 55, said she now carries her green card with her and has not applied for citizenship out of fear that she could be arrested in immigration court and deported. She said she worries about being separated from her husband and son, who are American.

In Madison County, Kentucky, where President Trump has easily won the last three general elections, protesters stood on the sidewalk outside the local courthouse. As people in passing cars chanted pro-Trump slogans and jeered, demonstrators waved banners and American flags.

Organizers say the crowds are fueled by President Trump’s actions in recent months, including his role in the government shutdown, his attacks on higher education, his pressure on the Justice Department to prosecute political opponents, immigration raids, federal troops in cities, and the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill.” “I think this one will be even louder than the last one,” said Hunter Dunn of 50501, a progressive group that helped organize the event.

He added, “I’m seeing a greater emphasis on the fact that this isn’t just a race, where people gather and then everyone goes home and Mr. Trump’s agenda fails. We’re seeing a shift in the public’s understanding that this is a marathon.”

Political science professor Jeremy Pressman, co-director of the Crowd Counting Consortium, a joint project of the Harvard Kennedy School and the University of Connecticut, said that the aggressive action of Mr. Trump’s second term may have emboldened protesters.

“The intensity of the action will further increase the intensity of the response or counter-protests,” he said.

Mr. Pressman noted that the previous No Kings Day in June was one of the largest days of protests in American history. He added that an analysis showed that protests are now occurring in a wider range of areas than during Mr. Trump’s first term—including those where a majority voted Republican.
