The former girlfriend of Lostprophets singer Ian Watkins, accused of child sex abuse, has spoken out after he was murdered in prison.
The 48-year-old former singer was attacked at HMP Wakefield on Saturday morning while serving a 29-year sentence for multiple child sex offenses. Two people have been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Joan Majdaleks, who played a key role in exposing his crimes, said: “It’s a huge shock, but I wonder why it didn’t happen sooner. I’ve always been waiting for this phone call.”
“Ever since I’ve been in prison, he’s had a target on his back.
“I was always afraid he’d come out and find me or something, so this is a relief.”
Since Watkins went to prison in 2013, Ms. Mjadzeliks has had problems with PTSD and self-harm because of their relationship.
“After what he did, I wanted him dead for a long time. I’m relieved, I feel like a burden has been lifted off my head,” she said.
“This is the second time someone has slit his throat. I expected it to happen before. He’s been there for almost 13 years.”
In 2023, Watkins was held hostage by other inmates for several hours, causing non-life-threatening injuries.
She further stated that his death could now mark the beginning of a “new phase of her life.”
Ms. Majdzelics and another man had reported Watkins to authorities four times before his arrest, but were not believed.
She said, “The man I fell in love with never existed. He tricked me, and the man who died in prison today was a stranger to me. I never loved him, he just put on a character.”
Watkins was sentenced to 29 years in prison and a further six years’ probation after admitting a number of sexual offences, including attempting to rape a fan’s child.
He was arrested in September 2012 after a drugs warrant was executed at his Pontypridd home, where a large number of computers, mobile phones and storage devices were seized.
