According to the United States Geological Survey, a major magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the Philippine Sea on Friday.

According to agency data, the earthquake occurred at 9:43 a.m. Philippine time, about 12 miles east of Santiago, Philippines.

Seismologists may revise the reported magnitude of an earthquake as they review available data. Additional information gathered about the earthquake may also prompt USGS scientists to update the earthquake-intensity map.

An aftershock is usually a smaller earthquake that occurs after a larger earthquake in the same area. Aftershocks are typically minor shifts in a section of a fault that slipped during the initial earthquake.
