Rex Ryan broke down in tears while remembering Nick Mangold.

“It’s very sad,” the former New York Jets head coach said on ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown, reacting to the NFL star’s passing.

Mangold died on October 25th at the age of 41 due to complications from kidney disease.

The 62-year-old former New York Jets head coach paid tribute to Mangold on Sunday, October 26th, just hours after the NFL team announced the athlete’s passing.

“It’s very sad,” Ryan said, holding back tears during his appearance on ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown. “[He] was truly an amazing young man. I had the privilege of coaching him for six years with the Jets.”

Recalling the end of his tenure with the New York-based football team, Ryan explained that despite the injury, Mangold remained steadfast in his respect for his coach. “He wanted to play for me,” Ryan said. “That’s what I remember about this kid. He was so good, and so young.”

“I feel so bad for his wife and family,” he said through tears, as a colleague consoled him on-air.

The retired NFL star’s former team announced his passing in a press release on October 26, stating that Mangold had died the day before due to complications from kidney disease. He was 41.

The announcement of Mangold’s passing came just 10 days after he contacted fans and asked for a kidney donor while undergoing dialysis.

The Ohio native was the 29th overall pick from the state in the 2006 NFL Draft. He played 171 games for the Jets and participated in seven Pro Bowls before retiring after the 2016 season. In 2022, he was inducted into the Jets’ Ring of Honor.

Last week, Mangold was announced as one of 52 modern-era players currently being considered for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Meanwhile, Ryan served as the Jets’ head coach from 2009 to 2014. He then served in the same role for the Buffalo Bills from 2015 to 2016. Ryan also held various coaching positions with several other NFL and college football teams.
