South carolina vs Lsu Nussmeier and No. 11 LSU overcome mistakes to beat South Carolina 20-10, USA Newyorktimes
Garrett Nussmeier passed for 254 yards and two touchdowns, the LSU Tigers’ defense held the South Carolina Gamecocks’ Lanorris Sellers in check, and the 11th-ranked Tigers overcame three turnovers to beat the Gamecocks 20-10 on Saturday night.
“We found a way to win, although we made some mistakes that could have been disastrous at times,” LSU coach Brian Kelly said. “The bottom line is this: Against an SEC opponent, we held them to 10 points and, really, except for our mistakes, we controlled the flow of the game.”

The win arguably should have been easier for LSU (5-1, 2-1 SEC), which twice lost the ball on the South Carolina goal line on a fumble and an interception. The first of Nussmeier’s two interceptions also came from the Gamecocks.
LSU tight end Tre’Dez Green, a 6-foot-7 former college basketball player, caught eight passes for 119 yards and a touchdown.
“Obviously, he’s a mismatch. He’s a unique talent, and we have to keep integrating him into our offense,” Kelly said.
Green, who received a game ball, said he has largely recovered from a knee injury suffered during LSU’s home opener on September 6.
“The ball came to me a lot tonight,” he said. “I didn’t want to waste that opportunity.”
Kyle Parker had five catches for 75 yards, including a 43-yard score in which he caught a short slant pass and eluded everyone.
LSU also rushed for a season-high 166 yards, with Caden Durham adding 70 yards on 15 carries.
Damian Ramos’ second field goal with 1:46 remaining in the game nearly sealed the game, completing a drive that began after LSU cornerback Mansur Deleon broke up Sellers’ fourth-down pass with 5:43 remaining.
Sellers passed for 124 yards, had five sacks, and was intercepted once by LSU safety Tamarcus Cooley.
Kelly said, “Sellers is tough to corner. I’m proud of the way our players attacked him… He’ll leave here feeling the loss against LSU.”
South Carolina (3-3, 1-3) drove into Tigers territory six times, but four of those times came up short. One fruitless drive ended with a missed field goal, two ended with punts, and a turnover on downs.
“I’m very sad we didn’t win that football game,” South Carolina coach Shane Beamer said. He pointed out that the Gamecocks had 193 yards rushing. “When we ran the ball, when we won the turnover battle, won the time of possession—when you do all that, you should win the game.”
LSU was on the verge of taking a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter as running back Ju’Juan Johnson tried to dodge tacklers and reach the goal line. But defensive tackle Monkel Goodwine stripped the ball, and edge rusher Brian Thomas Jr. recovered it in the end zone.
Three plays later, Matt Fuller, who entered the game with 71 yards rushing this season, scored a 72-yard touchdown run to give the Gamecocks a 7-3 lead.
The Tigers responded quickly, driving 72 yards in six plays and scoring on a 6-yard touchdown catch on a fade pass from Green.
Beamer was upset and confused about a flag that nullified an initially successful pass on a fake punt in the third quarter.
Beamer said the officials told him the snap occurred when the officials hadn’t signaled for players on both teams to be subbed on. But after watching the replay, Beamer began yelling and gesturing angrily at the officials for several minutes.
“In 26 years of coaching, I’ve never seen anything like this,” Beamer said. “No official was standing over the ball.
