DALLAS — Victor Wembanyama led a remarkable comeback, scoring 40 points and 15 rebounds, as the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Dallas Mavericks 125-92 on Wednesday night, shattering the dream debut of No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg.
Flagg, the second-youngest player to start in his NBA debut, two days after LeBron James, didn’t score until the first possession of the second half and finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The 18-year-old from Duke had more trouble settling into a rhythm than the second overall pick. Dylan Harper, who came off San Antonio’s bench midway through the first quarter, sparked a run that helped the Spurs take control, scoring 15 points. Reigning Rookie of the Year Stephen Cassell scored 22 points for the Spurs.
Anthony Davis had 22 points and 13 rebounds, as the Mavericks awaited the return of star guard Kyrie Irving, who is months away from his season debut due to his recovery from ACL surgery.
Wembanyama, who set the record for most points scored by the Spurs in a season opener, dominated the match against two of the top three players recently selected in the draft. The 2023 No. 1 overall pick delivered several spectacular dunks and three blocks, as well as two buckets that drew fouls, forcing Davis and Derek Lively II to the bench.
The 7-foot-4-inch sensation played in the regular season for the first time since deep vein thrombosis (a blood clot condition in the shoulder) required surgery and ended his second season in February.
Wembanyama put the Spurs in control by leading the Spurs to a 13-0 run at the end of the first half. After Harper scored, 2024 Rookie of the Year Pump faked out of a double team and was fouled by Davis during a reverse dunk. On the next down, he hit a jumper, earning Davis his fourth foul.
