Stock market today: Dow sinks 800 points, S&P 500 and Nasdaq see worst day since April as Trump’s renewed tariff threats spook Wall Street
Stock markets plunged sharply on Friday after President Trump announced that his administration was considering a “significant increase” in tariffs on Chinese goods.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) fell more than 800 points, or 1.9%, while the S&P 500 (^GSPC) fell 2.7%, near session lows.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) dropped about 3.6%, led by declines in semiconductor and other technology stocks.
Bitcoin (BTC-USD) prices also fell sharply on Friday as investors rushed to the exits amid a broader market sell-off.
Stock markets had hit record highs this week as expectations of AI trade and monetary policy easing fueled enthusiasm for continued growth.
But Trump’s Friday social media posts further fueled fears that US-China trade tensions have reached a new low.
Bitcoin (BTC-USD) prices fell sharply on Friday as investors made hasty withdrawals amid a broader market sell-off.
The decline in afternoon trading came after President Trump threatened to impose “heavy” tariffs on China and indicated he had no need to meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
The world’s largest cryptocurrency fell 3% during the sell-off, falling below $118,000.
Ether (ETH-USD) also fell 6%.
The stock market decline accelerated in less than an hour of trading.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) fell more than 600 points, or 1.5%, while the S&P 500 (^GSPC) fell 2%.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) fell 2.2%, led by declines in semiconductor and other technology stocks.

Cocoa futures (CC=F) fell more than 1.8% in afternoon trading on Friday, hovering around $5,838 per ton. If this decline continues until closing, it would mark the longest eight-week weekly decline for this soft commodity since May 1999.
Chocolate manufacturers have purchased less cocoa in recent months to save money, so the threat of an oversupply of the commodity by the end of 2025 and 2026 has depressed prices since mid-August.
Excessive rainfall in West Africa, the world’s cocoa-producing capital, and increased prices paid to cocoa farmers by governments have boosted production rates and further depressed prices.
Commodity traders will await third-quarter grinding data from the European Cocoa Association next Thursday – a key indicator on cocoa bean utilization rates – as they look for clues on the direction of prices.
